Judging 101
Luke 6:37 "Stop judging others, and you will not be judged. Stop criticizing others, or it will all come back on you. If you forgive others, you will be forgiven. NLT
What is Jesus telling us here? Well, according to the this word, the act of judging or "being conclusive"
is the very act of condemning. You see, when something is judged, it is concluded! When a judge in court passes a judgment, it has been concluded because the facts have been presented and the arguments have been made. So, based on what the judge knows, he or she can pass judgment. But Jesus is saying that because you don’t know all the facts, you cannot pass judgment on someone before time. Sinners may come to Christ eventually, so their end, you do not know. That’s who Jesus was referring to. Don’t condemn, judge, or criticize a sinner because they are not yet a believer! This does not mean that we should warn believers of the worlds deceptive devices, but it does mean that we cannot prejudge their destiny and condemn a sinner to hell.
Now, leaders, pastors, etc. in the church are equipped to pass judgment on certain things because they are in charge of certain aspects of the ministry. Paul taught this in his writings and he encouraged a church to pass judgment on a man at Corinth because of his lifestyle. But his judgment of this situation came to help him be in good standing for his final judgment of God in the end. Listen, we are not to pass a judgment on sinners, but according to the Word of God, we are to judge our brothers and sisters. The word tells us to go to them when we find them in a fault. That’s a form of judging right? It also tells us to rebuke them openly when they continue in public sin. That’s judgment right? So, we must realize that if we keep the word in context we will understand that Jesus was teaching the world in this passage in Luke, while Paul was teaching the church in Corinthians. That’s it! We don’t teach sinners what Paul taught the church. They are not the church, they are the world. So, the world will always say, "do not judge me" and they are right. If they are not a believer, then you cannot judge them because there is nothing to judge.
We are only suppose to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to sinners. So we don’t judge them, or condemn them, or even criticize them if they are not a part of the faith. God is their judge. But to keep purity and holiness in the church of God, we are suppose to deal with heresy, sinful lifestyles, and other forms of sin that are practiced by believers in our fellowships.
God gave us the power to discern it and the gave our leaders the authority to rebuke it.
